Watermarks

A document outlives the conversation that produced it

You send a draft on Tuesday. In March someone quotes it back as if it were final, and nothing on the page says otherwise.

Add a markRuns in your browser

A watermark is the cheapest insurance in document handling. One word across every page keeps the file's status attached to the file, where it survives forwarding, printing and the memory of everyone involved.

Three things worth marking

Status

DRAFT, or FOR REVIEW. The point is that it travels with the pages rather than living in the covering e-mail.

Audience

The recipient's name on their copy. If it reappears somewhere it should not, the copy identifies itself.

Time

A date on a quotation or a price list, so nobody holds you to numbers from two years ago.

What this adds

  • Adds a watermark, page numbers or a signature
  • Runs the page tools entirely in your browser: those files are never uploaded

What a watermark is not

It is a mark on the page, not a lock on the file. Anyone determined can work around it. The job is to prevent honest confusion, which is what actually goes wrong, rather than to defeat a motivated person.

And the commercial part

  • Let you download the result without a subscription — running the tool is open to everyone, the download is not
